Weekend Coffee Share. Out of my Head, and onto the Page.

Welcome to my Weekend Coffee Share, hosted by Allison at eclecticali.wordpress.com

What a lovely weekend it is! Here in the southeast U.S., it will be close to 100 degrees today! I took Bixby to the dog park Saturday, and we could not even last an hour.
There were plenty of dogs, and he loved that, but they all where panting heavily in no time in that heat. At least he drank a lot of water! The dog park is always a treat for me as well; I love to watch dogs play.

I am approaching my birthday this coming week. It makes me look back and ponder my life and choices while appreciating all that has been given me. I have been blessed in so many ways.

This throwback photo is of me in April, 1996, either a week before or the day before I gave birth to my son. All of this talk of women’s reproductive rights gets me thinking. My son was certainly planned and wanted. For those who had a child that was not planned, I honor you as well. No two experiences with motherhood are the same. How different could the pregnancy experience be for someone who is raped or does not have access to birth control? We do not need to move backward with women’s rights, or the rights of any other sort of person! I suppose I’ll be accused of being political. Posting certain things on my Facebook can lead to arguments from some of my staunchly GOP friends. I have some in my family, too. I love them no matter what and try to disagree amicably.

All of this reflection has led to me setting up a separate Facebook to share some poems and past journal entries about my experiences as a woman. Oddly, if I try to boost any of those posts or the page, FB wants an extra authentication process, meaning I will likely be put on a list somewhere. I feel so important now! I am tired of holding my tongue just because I am a girl, and I have never picketed for women’s rights. I am a firm believer that the pen is mightier than the sword.

As part of this whole process, I have considered writing some books under a pen name, and do not always feel comfortable sharing certain things under my own name that involve subverting the paradigm or opening eyes to my point of view, so I’m trying it out to see how it goes.

My most recent post was a poem entitled “Sorry,” which is all about the way many of us have been raised to be sorry for so many things, when we just needed to express our emotions or we didn’t want a hug from Dad’s scary old man friend. You know, taught to be sorry when we didn’t live up to others’ expectations of how we should behave as a girl.

I do think this may lead into a book someday, but I have no other details. I am still working on my WIP, Malachi, and I am considering a summer trip to the place which is the setting of this book. Of course, this means I need to get to planning, and I am so behind on that. I can do this!

Why was she always so sorry? (Image via Pixabay).

Thank you for stopping by for my Weekend Coffee Share! I know I have mostly been sharing about what’s going on in my head, but hey, I am doing something about it, because my thoughts don’t eat me up anymore. Have a great week!

#weekendcoffeeshare Do the Hustle!

wp-1485560541716.jpg

Welcome to the #weekendcoffeeshare, created by parttimemonsterblog.com.  If we were having coffee this morning of February 18, I’d tell you:

I’m really hustling to get my work and my name in the public “reader’s sphere.”  I recently joined a new website called Niume which is a blogging and social media site that will start paying when I reach a certain number of views.  See my post about it here:  https://pamelascanepa.wordpress.com/2017/02/10/use-niume-to-promote-your-writing/  It includes a referral link if you want to sign up there, publish some posts, and give me credit.  That’s how I got signed up, by reading about a fellow WordPress blogger’s experience!

You needed a visual interruption, right?  This is from back in the day when I took ballroom and contemporary dance lessons and was practicing at home.  One of the dances was the hustle, though I can’t guarantee that’s what I was doing here!  Alas, dance lessons are not as important these days as stretch and yoga to undo all the typing and stressing I do lately.

Speaking of social media and doing new things, I’ve been trying to share my work and even the work of others to Reddit.com.  Evidently, they are not too keen on sharing.  Is anyone here using Reddit to promote your work or just to write in general?  If so, please tell me what is working for you and I will give it a shot.  It just doesn’t work the way I’ve been using it lately.  They tell me I don’t have enough karma, so evidently, karma means more than just upvoting other people’s posts.  I do share their posts occasionally on Facebook, but do they have to all be from the subreddit where I want to post?  I mainly want to post short stories there, and I don’t want to re-write them on Reddit if I publish them in a blog already.  If you’re successful there, please let me know how!  I’d appreciate it.

I have been writing, of course, to tame my brain and to share and get my name “out there.”  I’ve been pretty reclusive and introverted lately, yet I’ll share my thoughts anywhere.  This is because I’ve grown comfortable with them.  I also like to stay close to home.  Too much has happened in my family, as I’ve posted previously.  I’ve had some dark thoughts and posted one story titled, “Her Beef with Death.”  Read it at  https://niume.com/post/256429. You don’t have to subscribe to read it.  I did post it on WordPress, but I don’t get the way a shared post shows words all scrunched together as if I don’t know how to type.  So, I shortened it and tidied up the sample you see on WordPress.  No big deal.  What shows on WordPress is about half of the story.  It is not dreadfully long but is longer than a flash fiction piece.

My last Flash fiction offering was on 2-11, “Upon Her Throne She Waits.”  It, too, was dark and mysterious.  Read it at https://pamelascanepa.wordpress.com/2017/02/11/fridayfictioneers-on-her-throne-she-waits/  I love participating in the Flash Fiction challenges, because sometimes I get the best ideas in quick spurts.  I may add to “A Date to Remember” (posted here over a week ago) on my other blog in installments.  I hear writers do it all the time.  Why not?

In the meantime, there are works in progress.  One is going through editing; much like a good steak should not be served raw, it will truly be done when I publish it.  I am also handwriting a story with an animal character.  Yes, that’s different for me, but I’m enjoying it and will start typing soon.

What else is new?  My family situation is about the same.  My work life is about the same.  I stress over them both.   There is not much drama in my family right now; the dust has settled since the accident on Jan. 1, however, it’s hard, when you want what is best for someone but can’t force them to go out and reclaim their life.  Work is hard because it is a constant pressure-cooker full of drama.  Pre-teens and middle-schoolers surround me all day, and they don’t always pay attention.  One of the first and foremost reasons I write is to escape these things.  Therefore, be glad if most of my post is centered around writing.  🙂

After perusing my post, one of my short-term goals is to learn how to create hyperlinks behind a title.  The post with instructions by a fellow blogger is saved to my desktop.  I’ll review it and practice, one of these days.

The Weekend Coffee Share was created by Part Time Monster .   This week for the first time it will be hosted by Nerd in the Brain).  Thank you Emily!  You can join this week’s Coffee Share on her blog or by clicking on the “Linkup Linky“.  In fact, I encourage you to click on the “linky” to see what’s been going on in the lives of other bloggers and even join us if you haven’t before.

The Book Trailer Journey! #selfpublishing #newrelease

pamelascanepa_cover
“Seeing Through Sampson’s Eyes,” sci-fi

My second Kindle ebook is now live for download at Amazon! http://www.amazon.com/dp/B01GNNCHHQ  Downloadable for 2.99, or free in Kindle Unlimited!  I feel like it is more action-packed and suspenseful than the first.  This is less romance, and more coming of age, sci-fi, in a technologically advanced future, though it is somewhat of a sequel to my first book.   A twenty year old searches for her identity.  And flirts with danger.  (Didn’t we all)?  Here, I am documenting my humorous, albeit frustrating journey to get a book trailer out on social media beforehand to promote it….

6/06: 7:48 a.m. Facebook post:  Finished a cool book trailer video for my sequel, and my laptop ate it….or maybe The Cloud ate it? It’s gone. Next time, I’ll feed it cookies first. ‪#‎backtostepone‬ ‪#‎learnbytrialanderror‬

Evening of 6/06, Inner monologue:  Okay, I have the bare bones outline still saved from 5 days ago.  I’ll just add to that.  Have to change Dr. Parington’s photo.  Add my book cover at the start and end of the video.  Edit captions, make font bigger.  Add music.  Slow down 3rd and 5th frames.  Add Amazon link (Now live) for the Kindle book.  Save.  Double check saving. (Can’t lose again, please, not again.)  This music is perfect.  Now, upload to Youtube.  Why is the little red-haired girl the main visual (thumbnail, that’s what they call it)? She’s too cute.  This video conveys suspense.  Oh, I can change the thumbnail.  (Sees only two other options, neither are any more representative of the tone I want to communicate.  Uggg!)  Okay, I’ll abandon the idea of changing the thumbnail.  Maybe I’ll figure that out someday.

*Saves again.  Crashes, way past bedtime.*

6/07: 8:01 a.m. So, I need to use some wording that conveys that this is not a cutesie little story,  despite the thumbnail, but rather, that it is more suspenseful and intense.  Got it.

Facebook post:  “Book trailer finished! The cute redhead will now lead you through the rabbit hole: ‪#‎KindleEbooks‬ ‪#‎Newrelease‬ ‪#‎indiewriter‬ ‪#‎scifi‬ https://youtu.be/PQuKD6LUZGY  This is a sequel, but could be read alone.  Thank you for watching!”   *I think I better hurry and log off so I can get to work!*

After all that trouble,  I’ve had many compliments on my book trailer!  All because I did not give up.  And I won’t.  Ever.

It was referred to as “intense” and “the best I’ve seen.”  Now it has been viewed 43 times.  This is one way to spread the word about my book!  Now, please, go watch the trailer! http://youtu.be/PQuKD6LUZGY     And maybe, just maybe, download and read the book!

Promoting & Marketing. Author interview!

Through Twitter, having identified myself as a writer, I’ve received countless Tweets and follows from book promoters.  Some are free, some charge $10 to Tweet your book and post it on a newsletter, some charge $99 a month to Tweet, Facebook, give reviews, etc.  I choose one of the economical offerings, but hey, I did get to fill out an author interview!  I am posting the link, in case anyone is interested!
