Book blurb:

On a whim, feisty Tabitha takes a trip to the future with her trusted friend Milt, an awkward Science professor. Wonders and curiosities abound.  However, their fun journey soon leads to a challenging maze of danger and difficult decisions.  On an unplanned “detour,” the two set events into action that could save one life yet destroy another.  Can these friends of completely different mindsets agree on a course of action?  Detours in Time starts as a fantastic escape and grows to present many moral dilemmas that could either ruin the best friendship or bring two people closer together.

Detours in Time, Main Character Intro.

As part of my book launch for my first full-length novel, Detours in Time, I held a Facebook launch.  It lasted several hours, and I did have a few people who kept me company online for the event.  At any rate, one of the elements I loved the most was sharing my visual representations of the main, and side, characters in this sci-fi, time-travel novel.  So, I thought I’d share it with the WordPress community.  Side characters will be presented in a few days.  Today, I’ll share my main characters, Dr.  Milt Braddock and Tabitha Hansen.  I hope you enjoy!

Photos courtesy of Pixabay.

From the top left, we have two representations of Dr. Milt(on) Braddock, a Science professor, because he is truly a mix of the two pictured men.  He has a lot of hair like young photographer, yet he is a little older, with the smile lines of the second guy, and yes, he wears spectacles when needed.  I guess the hair is what gives him a little bit of a sexy edge, despite being older and super-intelligent.  By the way, intelligence is quite sexy!

Quotes on Milt:

“Obviously, being the scientist made him an authority at times.  At other times, she could tell he was struggling to behave in socially appropriate ways.  It was actually quite endearing.”

“He was odd, quirky, and comfortable alone.”

“He let it down slowly and hesitantly, as if having been forced to choose between the bug and Pinky.  He was like a teenage boy when it came to bugs, worms, caterpillars.  Pinky hated bugs, but still found his excitement amusing.   He was truly a young soul in that fifty-year-old body, that honestly didn’t look fifty, anyhow.”

“While at times he felt she was wasting her time with him, he also felt incredibly lucky.”

Tabitha (Pinky) Hansen is the woman pictured above, a struggling artist who was hired to clean Dr. Milt Braddock’s office by his colleagues, years before the plot of this novel begins which is in 1997.  At the point of this novel, she works in an art gallery.  On her off-time, she is normally dressed in jeans, Doc Maartens, and a band t-shirt, with lots of hair.  She doesn’t wear much make-up except for special occasions.  She is a good bit younger than Milt, yet not as socially awkward.  She is quite independent due to having lost her parents when younger.  She is also just a little stubborn and not as open-minded as Milt.

Quotes on Pinky:  “She had a big voice for such a small girl, along with even bigger dreams, first, to become a dancer, and later, to break into the Art scene.”

“Anyone who knew Tabitha well never asked why, at thirty, she wasn’t married yet.  She was fiercely independent and moody.”

“She was the realist of the two of them.”

“Milt liked raising Pinky’s ire at times, just for fun.”

Milt and Pinky don’t agree on everything, but they make each other laugh and get along pretty well.  That’s probably helpful when you get into a sticky situation.

The bottom line is, when you are setting out on a time-travel journey, it is best to take a friend.  Be sure it’s someone you can trust and can stand being around for days…..

So you contrive a powerful piece of machinery that can take you to the past or the future.  Only, it in itself is not foolproof.  There are always bugs to be worked out…

Then, you contrive a list of rules for time-travel to avoid sticky situations and a possible paradox.  Except, your time-travel companion has a different moral compass than you.  Can you make her adhere to your made-up rules when they start to challenge her sense of ethics?  With two people of completely different mindsets, can a compromise be reached, or does one of them have to bend?

Read Detours in Time and its tale of time-travel and the messes we can make.  What the heck.  It’s summer!  Time for a journey….

I thank the two people who have reviewed my book this last week!  The review goal is truly an uphill climb, but they are coming in.   This is my first full-length novel, after all.

Let my latest sci-fi release take you on a journey!

I’m loving this latest graphic, because it looks like an album cover, and to me, it looks like summer, and it screams, “Let’s go on a journey, you and me!”  Be sure to take someone you trust, someone you could stand getting lost with, and someone who can think quickly in urgent situations.

Teaser:

“He (Milt) let it down slowly and hesitantly, as if having been forced to choose between the bug and Pinky.  He was like a teenage boy when it came to bugs, worms, caterpillars.  Pinky hated bugs, but still found his excitement amusing.   He was truly a young soul in that fifty-year-old body, that honestly didn’t look fifty, anyhow.”

Author’s note– (I actually had to answer this in one of my blog interviews)

By the way, if I got stuck with a character on a deserted island, I’d totally choose Milt. How fun that would be with his childlike wonder and curiosity!  He’d chart the stars for us at night and tell me stories about the constellations.  He’d know the best way to build shelter.  He wouldn’t mind getting dirty either, nor would he care if my hair got frizzy. Awkward scientist trying for the part of book-boyfriend.  Works for me!

Detours in Time, Visual Book Promo. (Fun with Canva)

Yes, this post is about book promo graphics and a little bit about my new book.  I’ve had fun making them with Canva for my new sci-fi release, Detours in Time, a tale of two steadfast friends who take a life-changing journey to the future that becomes a challenge course in difficult decisions.  This post is also about the characters from my book.  I think each post says something about them that is important to the story.

DetoursMeme2.”

The above says the characters are human.  They make mistakes.  They know there are  rules to follow and that time travel can be very sticky.  Yet, each individual has their own standard for abiding by rules.   For instance, would you break a rule to save a life? Where would you draw the line?  If you change something in the future, is it actually changed at all?  What if you found out too much about the future?

DetoursMemeMilt1 look fifty,

This graphic above screams romance.  Yet, my book is not classified as romance, since I think romance is my man joining me in goofy song when I sing Bohemian Rhapsody.  Is there even a genre for that?  However, let me say this, the best time traveler* usually has a steadfast companion.  This graphic gives some insight into what Pinky thinks of Milt.  While the guy pictured does not look as Milt is described in the book, he has a youthful smile, and so does Milt.  In my opinion, an awkward scientist with youthful curiosity is definitely appealing.  Milt was fun to write.  🙂  So was Pinky, which brings me to the next photo…..

DetoursPinkyMeme.”

This photo perfectly wraps up Pinky’s attitude and tells a little about the dynamics between Pinky and Milt at the start of the story.  Unfortunately,  I had to use a photo with a girl who looks like a teenager to convey the right sentiment.  Pinky is 30 years old.  Well, she dresses like a teen.  So, the sentiment expressed here is perfect.  I could not explain all of this on Twitter, but I figured my bloggers’ community would understand.

DetoursPaperback_5211604616564778768_n  Detours in Time is my latest sci-fi novel, released on 6/16.  It is available on Kindle, in paperback, and free on Kindle Unlimited.  https://www.amazon.com/Detours-Time-Pamela-Schloesser-Canepa-ebook/dp/B0711ZW6XF

(Of course, I would love for a lot of people to read it, no matter what format you choose, and feedback is a wonderful thing).

Brief Blurb:  Pinky and Milt have been steadfast friends for years, but their journey to the future becomes a challenging maze of danger and difficult decisions. On an unplanned “detour,” the two set events into action that could save one life and destroy another. Can these friends of completely different mindsets agree on a course of action?

*Please note:  Evidently I can’t spell traveler wrong.  In the U.S., it’s spelled with one L.  In Britain, it is spelled with two.  Since I read books from both places equally, neither looks right to me, therefore, neither one can be wrong either.  I’m sticking to that story.  🙂

Peace,

Pamela

Genre:  Sci-fi, time-travel/adventure   221 pages (e-book), 301 pages (paperback)

Read the book that early readers have called “Captivating!”  Here is a blurb:

On a whim, feisty Tabatha takes a trip to the future with Milt, an awkward science professor. The supposed fun trip turns intense and presents some moral dilemmas when they make discoveries about their future selves and learn that while their actions may save one life, they could destroy another. Amid the turmoil, the two must decide if their actions have drastically altered the lives of the people they have met.  Can Milt and Tabatha agree on a course of action?

Teaser:

“He was twenty years her senior, but from his childlike curiosity and goofy sense of humor, one wouldn’t know it, and they got along very well.  Of course, traveling back in time and meeting his twenty-two-year-old-self did not help matters for Pinky at all. ”

X is for Xenophobia. #AtoZChallenge #amwriting

No, this is not a preachy post on how we should all appreciate other cultures (though we should).  It is my understanding that xenophobia goes much deeper than culture shock and seems to be the resistance to adjusting to the fact that not everyone is like oneself.  Some don’t know the difference.  I am in the process of writing and editing that includes the culture shock one might experience if they went several years into the future.  One character seems to be close-minded about it.  Is she a xenophobic?  I am not an expert, but I had an interesting time creating the culture-shock in my most recent fiction story.   The book comes out in mid-June.  Here is some back story:

If you could take the ultimate escape, where would you go?  In November of 2015, I envisioned just that.  I would go to the future.  Things were a little rough in my family at the time, and I’d often take walks with the dog at night, staring up into the sky at the stars and wondering if I’d be able to visit them in any way other than imagination.  People in my online writer’s groups were going on and on about NANOWRIMO.  I thought about it, and decided I’d start typing a time travel story, but on my own timeline.  From this experience, I do kind of think writing saves my sanity.

At the end of November, I’d typed 30,000 words and had no idea how I’d end the story.  I just started imagining and typing and provided myself the escape I needed.  In January 2016, I took a James Patterson Master Writing class.  Man, I love his accent.  At any rate, I finished the novel by the end of January with approximately 66,000 words.  In the summer of 2016, I gave the manuscript a preliminary edit and had my mother, my first beta reader, give it a read-through.

I’ve recently paid someone to edit it and have had a book cover made.  By mid-June,  I hope to have this sci-fi novel published and available!   If it sounds interesting, please follow me on Amazon at  http://amzn.to/1t3BYGU and sign up for my author newsletter at http://t.co/Gj6d3CXMZq if you’d like to get a free 20-page sci-short story for download.

Way to throw in author promo., I suppose.  I guess I just really wanted to talk about the book.  Happy reading and writing, fellow bloggers!

*I’ve joined the April A to Z Blogger’s Challenge!  Each day this month, I will write something based on the next letter in the alphabet.  It’s been fun so far, yet it has really given me a chance to pause for reflection as well.
